Firstly, I want to thank you for your well wishes. I do think that the fact that African Americans are of African descent does make a difference in this area. Both in Kenya and in Rwanda, I found that people generally assumed that I was a local until they heard the accent. In Rwanda everyone usually started off speaking Kinyarwandan to me. Obviously, there will be some recognition of the fact that we are not native born, but it's not the way that a new immigrant from say South America is treated in the US.
